You’ve a Phrase Like the Back of a Bus

We now know the text to appear on the Irish team bus at EURO 2016. And it’s not ‘A Team of Gary Breens.’

The winner of the competition by the EURO 2016 sponsor Hyundai wins tickets to the tournament and the Irish winning slogan is ‘Dream it. Believe it. Achieve it.

The other two finalists for the Irish entry were ‘A True Game Changer’ and ‘Driven by Passion.’

At Euro 2012, the slogan on the Boys In Green coach was ‘Talk with your feet, play with your heart.’ That didn’t go so well.

In June, the Northern Irish bus will bear ‘Dare to Dream,’ England have ‘One team, one dream’, while Wales’ effort is ‘The Dragons shall rise.’

And what about Ireland’s group opponents? Belgium have ‘1 Team – 1 Ambition,’ Sweden have ‘Together for Sweden,’ and the Italians went with the imaginative ‘GO AZZURRI.’

They are the kind of buzzy phrases that are a PR firm’s wet dream but the team bus slogans for Euro 2016 are largely uninspiring.

Austria went for the catchy: Again and again, again and again, again and again Austria!

Czech Republic don’t intend topping the scoring charts with this: One team = One Goal!

Russia: One for all and all for one!

And Turkey’s ominous: It’s not over until we say it’s over

There have been some howlers in the past including these from World Cup 2014.

Argentina: Not just a team, we are a country

Australia: Socceroos: Hopping Our Way Into History!

Netherlands: Real Men Wear Orange

Or the superb French effort: Impossible Is Not A French Word
Except, according to the origins of the word impossible, it is!
