I was asked by Irish football journal Póg Mo Goal to illustrate an article about L.A Galaxy striker Robbie Keane. I’m quite the avid football fan so I jumped at the chance. The article pin pointed his stoic patriotism and how he’s brought that sense of passion across the pond to his new life in the MLS.
I wanted to focus on the colours of the Irish flag and give the illustration some brash vibrancy to match the pomp and flash of the MLS and American flag.
The original idea was to mesh the American flag with the Irish flag, but I felt the red stripes clashed too much with orange, so I simplified the colour palette. I also removed blue from the illustration.
As a last minute addition, I wanted to show Robbie Keane’s famous cartwheel goal celebration, as it’s been his trademark move for a while.
