Breen’s Boys in Fantasy Land

Usually at this point in the season, (yes, we are only one week in), Team Gary Breen would be rooted to the foot of the Fantasy Football table. But thanks to the dancing feet of Damien Duff, the Irish boys are sitting pretty in lower-half obscurity.

The Duffer’s score at Norwich saw him claim the points for the highest-ranked Irish player on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. The Sunderland pair of Sheasy and ‘Die Hard’ McClean contributed six each as Gary Breen XI sit in 77th position in the Copa Del Póg Mo Goal.

Shay Given told us he was available in a goalkeeping crisis and, for that reason, Donegal Catch stays as our number one as Keiren Westwood begins the season as he ended the last, on the bench at the Stadium of Light. With the lack of striking options compounded by Simon Cox, Kevin Doyle, and Leon Best dropping to the Championship, our only option to fill the final front spot was Conor ‘Leaps like a’ Sammon. His move to Derby leaves us short in the scoring department but rumours abound that Wexican international Doyle could be returning to the top flight with Everton hunting around the Wolves pack.

We’ll be keeping an eye on our Irish boys throughout the season. For now we’re off to a good start but if we’d made Duffer our captain, we’d be singing from the rooftops this week: “We all dream of a team of Gary Breens”.
