Samba Surprise: Big Phil Drops Kaká and Ron

WM 2006 - Ronaldinho und Kaka jubeln

Big Phil Scolari has shocked Brazilian supporters by omitting both Kaká and Ronaldinho for the upcoming Confederations Cup. The squad announcement, indicating the players expected to compete for World Cup glory on home soil next summer, drew gasps from the assembled press.

Scolari had consistently hinted that one of Kaká or Ronaldinho would be included, but not both. Now neither is named in his squad, which includes just four players who’ve previously featured in a World Cup.

“There is a 90 percent chance that they won`t play together,” Scolari said before the recent friendly draw with Chile but followers of the Selecáo were certain one would feature. The pair were the only remaining players from the Brazil team that won the World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002.

There’s also no place for Chelsea’s Ramires but club colleague Oscar is in along with David Luiz. Up front Ronaldinho’s team-mate Bernard joins PSG’s Lucas, Hulk, Leandro Damião, Fred, and of course, Neymar.

The Confederations Cup gets underway on June 15.
