Giovanni Trapattoni has taken a leap by naming Conor Sammon in his starting line-up for tomorrow night’s clash with Poland.
The former Derry City striker will partner Shane Long up front as the Irish manager names a new-look Ireland side with youth getting a fling at the Aviva Stadium.
Sammon is one of four players in Wednesday’s starting eleven to have come through the League of Ireland. The Derby County forward, whose team-mate Jeff Hendrick is also expected to feature, has impressed the Irish management with his physical presence.
As expected David Forde will start between the posts tomorrow night. The Millwall shot-stopper earns a chance in the Irish shirt as the benched Kieren Westwood revealed this week how he unsuccessfully tried to leave Sunderland in the January transfer window.
Ciaran Clark and Greg Cunningham are named in the defence while a midfield of Robbie Brady, James McCarthy, Glenn Whelan and James McClean will look to lay down a marker ahead of the crucial qualifying double-header in March.
Republic of Ireland vs Poland:
Forde, McShane, O’Shea, Clark, Cunningham, Brady, McCarthy, Whelan, McClean, Long, Sammon.
