On this day in 1990, Ireland came to a standstill as the Boys in Green took on hosts Italy in the World Cup quarter-finals in Rome. Toto Schillaci’s only goal broke Irish hearts but as commentator Jimmy McGee said, all that was lost was a match. So much more was gained along the way.
RTE’s post-match coverage included an interview with captain Mick McCarthy and manager Jack Charlton, before finishing with a musical montage of our maiden World cup adventure
The game also inspired this wonderful Smithwick’s ad some years later.
