Austria scored a massive win in World Cup qualifying Group C, defeating Sweden 2-1 in Vienna. The result, coupled with the Swedes’ expected victory over the Faroes next Tuesday, means both will be level on 11 points with Ireland with six games played and four to go.
A 26th minute penalty from Bayern’s David Alaba – scorer of the late equaliser in Dublin – was followed up with a second from Marc Janko.
Sweden, who came back from a 4-0 deficit to draw with Germany earlier in qualifying, replied through Johan Elmander with eight minutes to go but couldn’t find the equaliser.
With Sweden expected to bounce back with a win over the Faroes at home next week, the chase for second spot in Group C remains delicately poised.
In September, the Boys in Green will have to do what they haven’t done for an awful long time, beat at least one of their main group rivals either at home or away.
