Mick McCarthy, who was believed to be the FAI’s second choice, refused to comment on the appointment of Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane to the Republic of Ireland management and laughed when asked about you know what.
In a tetchy Ipswich Town press conference on Sky Sports News, the former Irish boss looked bemused by the line of questioning, saying he had ruled himself out of running for the job. McCarthy has consistently maintained he thought the job was Martin O;Neill’s to refuse.
The man known as Captain Fantastic in his Irish paying days refused to answer several questions and when asked why he wouldn’t respond, replied:
“I’m just a bit confused about you actually”
When it was pointed out that he was Irish manager when he had a big falling out with Keane, Mick laughed.
“Really, did it happen when I was asleep?”
“I was in the hot-seat and I loved it. We went from 59th to 13th in the world and we went out in the last 16 of the World Cup on penalties. We were successful.”
The reporter them asked: “Have you spoken to Roy Keane about the incident in 2002?”
“What do you think the fans will make of the new managemnt?”
Mick: (Silence) smiles, laughs, and says nothing.
