Santos: My Euro Vision for Boys in Green

He is the Indonesian visionary who has foreseen the Republic’s triumph at Euro 2012. A premonition of the colour green first came to his mind four years ago and he is convinced glory awaits Trapattoni’s Ireland. He predicted Greece’s win in 2004 and believes he possesses a sixth sense. Dwi Santos talks EXCLUSIVELY to Póg Mo Goal.

Dwi Santos is an English teacher from Ambon, Indonesia. Born in Bekasi, near the capital city of Jakarta, his hometown is currently in Purwokerto, Central Java. The 22-year-old avid soccer follower is certain the Republic of Ireland will be crowned European Champions this summer and tells us why.

You successfully predicted the outcome of Euro 2004 and almost 2008. Where did this power come from? Can you explain the background to your prediction?

I predict Ireland will win Euro 2012, not because I know about its players but it’s just what comes to my mind like what I felt for Greece in 2004. I don’t have any idea where the ‘power’ comes from. I think it is my natural talent. In daily life I also often have a right prediction about things. For example, when I was a student I would feel the teacher was about to ask me a question. And it happened. Other examples are when I’m going out at home, I sometimes can feel who I will meet on the street.

In 2004, my pastor asked me what team I predicted to be the European champions. I answered ‘Greece’. He laughed and thought that I was just a little boy who knew nothing about soccer. Everybody chose stronger teams like Portugal, France, or Netherlands at that time. After Euro 2004 ended, I seldom met with my pastor in Bekasi so I don’t know his reaction at finding out the surprising result predicted before by a little kid. But I never told anybody else about this before Greece came out as champions. Nobody really believed me then. That’s why now I uploaded a video of my Euro prediction to YouTube.

“When I played Pro Evolution Soccer on the Sony Playstation I just realised that Ireland has that exact green colour like came into my mind.”

When you say you saw the colour green, was it in a dream or a vision?

I did not see colours in dreams. I will explain it like this. If you hear the word ‘strong’, what image comes to your mind? For me, it’s a muscled arm. So every word is pictured in our brain. That’s why it is harder for little children to understand abstract things. If I hear ‘Euro 2012’, the image showed in my mind is a green colour. I first saw it four years earlier when Euro 2008 ended. At that time, I still could not determine which team represented that colour. When I played Pro Evolution Soccer on the Sony Playstation I just realised that Ireland has that exact green colour like came into my mind.

“Of course it will make more sense if I say Germany will win the Euros, but my heart doesn’t say so. History proves anything can happen in soccer.”

Some people are saying Germany also wear green as their second shirt, are you certain it is Ireland?

Yes, some other teams like Germany and Portugal have this green colour in their uniform. But Ireland has stronger green, in its flag (which Germany doesn’t have), in its first and second uniforms. Of course it will make more sense if I say Germany will win the Euros, but my heart doesn’t say so. History proves anything can happen in soccer.

Can you tell us anything more about the games against Croatia, Spain and Italy?

As I said before I cannot predict the details like the result of matches. What I can feel is who will eventually win the cup. Spain and Italy are world champions. They have many good players. But in the other side their mental burden is much heavier. They can be defeated for sure. Croatia cannot be underestimated. Ireland could lose to them. Remember Greece’s match results in the 2004 group stage? They beat Portugal, drew with Spain, and were defeated by the weaker team, Russia.

Who is your favourite Irish player? Will James McClean be part of the Irish squad this summer?

Honestly, I don’t know much about Irish soccer. I like Damien Duff (he is a good player in the Playstation game “Winning Eleven”) but I just knew that he is Irish about a year ago. So you can say he is my favourite Irish player. I know Keane and Given because they play in the English Premier League. But I’m sorry I don’t know about McClean.

“I want to see Ireland play like Chelsea played against Barca in the Champions League semi-final recently I hope Trapattoni can hear me.”

Do you have a prediction for Ireland’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil?

I don’t know what will happen in the next World Cup. I’m never sure when I predict about it. I don’t know why. I just can say, after winning this Euro, if Ireland want still to have top performances, they should not care too much what people say. If they think all-out defence is effective, then just apply it. I want to see Ireland play like Chelsea played against Barca in the Champions League semi-final recently. Trapattoni is an Italian too; he must know how to defend very well. Make the opponents frustated like Greece and Chelsea did. I hope Trapattoni can hear me.

What is the hat you are wearing in the video?

It is called “Udeng”, from Banten Province. I bought it in my campus (Universitas Pelita Harapan in Tangerang, Banten).

Anyway, my explanation may sound illogical and does not make any sense. But I want to make sure all people understand that illogical things do exist, sixth sense does exist. Intuition or whatever we call it does exist. Many people can’t feel like me because they rely on logic too much and do not train the senses.

Finally, who will we beat in the Euro 2012 final?

I am not sure which team will face Ireland in the final. I cannot feel those details. But I think Germany is a good team. And England is the perfect opponent for Ireland to beat in the final.
