IN A surprising move, Shay Given has decided to stay at Manchester City and fight for his first team place against Joe Hart.
It had been widely rumoured that the Irish custodian would move to London to either Fulham or Arsenal. Much depended on Arsene Wenger’s attempts to sign Mark Schwarzer which would have allowed Given to link up once more with Mark Hughes.
Many felt that Man City would not allow Given to be sold to a Premier League title rival such as Arsenal, citing why Craig Bellamy was allowed to go to Cardiff despite interest from top-flight sides.
However, the Guardian newspaper claims the Donegal man took himself off the transfer list after discusions with Man City officials including manager Roberto Mancini.
Uppermost in Given’s mind was that he had joined City in the hope that he could win the first trophy of his career and that, by leaving for a smaller club, he would effectively be passing over that chance
